Nestled against the foothills of the snow-topped mountains, Calgary is a former cowtown which has grown into a major oil and industrial center. During our visit, we’ll tour some of North America’s most frequently photographed vistas, visit the site of the 1988 winter Olympics, immerse ourselves in pioneer and early western history, and top it off with three days of the festivities and rodeo activities at the 87TH year of the world famous Calgary Stampede. Your package highlights will include: • Seven nights of camping • Experienced wagonmasters-tour leaders. • Registration & orientation, with printed tour-schedule, agenda, and roster. • Souvenir packet and engraved name tag. • Welcome dinner at the 191-meter (626-foot) -high Calgary Tower. For visitors to Calgary, a visit to the top of the tower is an absolute must! Specially tinted, double plate glass windows make breathtaking photos a snap. The observation platform includes state-of-the-art telescopes, and an interactive video display, and the revolving Panorama Dining Room offers an entire sweep of the city, and its magnificent setting against the Rocky Mountains. All this, plus dinner cuisine prepared by world class chefs, make this a fine beginning for a wonderful “Rocky Mountain High”. • Charter bus transportation. During Stampede Days, thousands of visitors add to Calgary’s resident population to make it a particularly busy place. We’ll have buses to get us where we want to go, and back again. • Calgary city tour. We’ll see the city sights, including Olympic Park (site of the 1988 winter Olympics with its ski-jumps, and bobsled and luge runs) and its Hall of Fame depicting the history of the Winter Olympics since the first one, in France, in 1924. Lunch included! • Two afternoons of rodeo activities, semi-finals and finals. Stampede Park is like an immense state fair; there’s plenty going on in addition to the grandstand events. There’s history around every corner, and fun at every stop. There’s a Stampede Casino for those who wish to challenge Lady Luck. There are free stage shows. The list is virtually endless: agricultural and livestock exhibits and judging, an international blacksmiths’ competition, sheep shearing contests, crafts workshops, street food galore, a western art show and auction, midway rides, cooking demonstrations, hands-on opportunities as varied as rope-making, quilting, lace-making and butter churning, exhibitions of old-time lumberjack skills, roller hockey competitions, and races featuring pigs, ducks, and roosters. At Indian Village, you’ll be able to go inside authentic tepees, watch native dances and ancient hand games, and meet Plains Indians of the Sarcee, Stoney, Blackfoot, Peigan, and Blood tribes. At the Wild West Gallery you’ll learn the life story of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West shows of yesteryear. •One Evening Chuckwagon Races and Grandstand Show. This colorful race is an exciting spectacle of nerve and horsepower. Real horsepower, that is, with four-horse teams thundering around the track, hauling chuckwagons at breakneck speed. Afterwards, we’ll see a top-notch variety show, winding up with an awesome fireworks display. • Free time. There are so many other things to see and do here that we’ve allowed for shopping opportunities as well as some time for sight-seeing on your own, just resting, or taking advantage of other Stampede activities. • Banff National Park and Lake Louise. Our tour of Lake Louise will include lunch at the famous Chateau Lake Louise, with the twinkling Victoria Glacier as a backdrop. The icy, blue-green lake is at an altitude of 5,679 feet above sea-level. In the midst of these majestic mountains are hot mineral springs, white strips of glaciers, and towering forests. As we tour the park, we may expect to see elk and bison, as well as other wildlife native to the region. Remnants of Cree, Blackfoot, Stoney, Assinibone, and Kootenay Indian settlements are found in the park, as are traces of earlier unknown inhabitants dating back 11,000 years. • Continental breakfast, at the campground, as we say farewell and go our separate ways.
