A vast panorama of things to see and do awaits us on our Polar Bear Express Tour. Our circle tour will begin in Frankenmuth, Michigan in the Saginaw Valley. Perhaps Frankenmuth is best known for its Christmas Wonderland with displays of more than 30,000 Christmas ornaments, lights and decorations. From here we’ll cross into Ontario for our excursion into the “wilderness.” We’ll begin our trek along the sandy beaches of Lake Huron and through some of the finest farming communities in Ontario. We’ll travel between the Georgian Bay and picturesque Lake Simcoe. As we continue north, Ontario’s near north offers historic sites, spectacular scenery, Pioneer settlements, and the quiet beauty of the Sturgeon River. Then it’s on to a land for those lured by the call of the wild. A place of unchanging, uncompromising splendor, of stark beauty, of true solitude. This is where the real wilderness begins. Where a single railway track is the only link to the last outpost before the arctic landscape begins in earnest. Visitors have remarked that the breathtaking wilderness is reason alone to visit this part of Ontario. But there is much more. The wondrous gold and silver mining towns are packed full of rich, dynamic, and entertaining tales of Frontiermanship. Our destination in James Bay Frontier is Cochrane where we’ll board the Polar Bear Express as it winds its way through giant forest, scrub brush, and muskeg over bridges that span valleys like threads of a spider’s web, past tranquil lakes and roaring rivers to Moosonee. Then a 20 minutes boat ride to Moose Factory Island, Ontario’s oldest English settlement dating back more than 300 years. This is also the only place in Ontario where the ocean tides can be seen. In the four and one-half hours the Express is in Moosonee, many of the area’s points of interest and museums, providing a glimpse into its fascinating history, may be visited. Many of the local natives make crafts that are available in Moosonee and on Moose Factory Island. Back in Cochrane you can visit the Cochrane Railway and Pioneer Museum which was started in 1970 by the Board of Trade and later turned over to the town. A model train display introduces the main railway exhibits. Our tour then heads southward towards a more populated area where you can sail a boat, pet a porcupine, find an ancient fossil or predict the weather. You can test your fitness for space travel, compose a musical masterpiece or probe inside the human brain. All this can be done at Science North, Sudbury, Ontario’s original science center dedicated to the wonder of our everyday lives. We’ll continue our explorations into wondrous attractions as we cross back into the United States and take a boat ride through the Soo Locks which connect Lake Superior with the St. Mary’s River and Lake Huron. Next we’ll enjoy the Agawa Canyon train ride. The round trip rail excursion makes a two-hour stop at Scenic Agawa Canyon and offers views of unspoiled forests, hills, lakes, and streams in the rugged Algoma region. Our tour will end in Mackinaw City at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge which connects the lower Peninsula at Mackinaw City to the Upper Peninsula at St. Ignace. Fondly dubbed the “Mighty Mac,” the five-mile bridge is one of the longest suspension spans in the world. We’ll travel by boat to Mackinac Island for an enjoyable day of sight-seeing and shopping. The island is three miles long and two miles wide with high cliffs fronting the shore. Transportation on the island is by carriage, bicycle or horse; no motorized vehicles are permitted except for a public utility truck, a fire truck and an ambulance. Once on the island, The Grand Hotel takes you to a bygone era of old world hospitality and charm. Back to a time of horse-drawn carriages, High Tea and croquet on an endless lawn. We’ll enjoy the luncheon at the Grand Buffet - a true highlight of our tour. Special Note: We will not see Polar Bears during this trip.
