Dreams can be elusive things. But sometimes perseverance, determination, and hard work can make even the most elusive-appearing dream come true. John Lair had such a dream. Lair’s dream was to own the beautiful valley stretched out before him and to preserve there values of uncompromising honesty and sturdy independence and the spirit of neighborliness exhibited by the pioneers who had settled not only Renfro Valley, but the rest of America. But it was Chicago that would ironically open the door to his dream. And music would provide the vehicle that would eventually lead John Lair to own Renfro Valley. On Saturday night, November 4, 1939, Lair stepped to the microphone in his new barn and welcomed listeners to the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. For over sixty years now, the Renfro Valley Barn Dance has been a Kentucky tradition, and John Lair’s dream has made Renfro Valley “Kentucky’s Country Music Capital”. We will rendezvous at the Renfro Valley RV Park and have all of the following amenities available to us for our 3 night stay...cable TV hookups, 30 amp electric service, water and sewer, convenient coin laundry, sparkling clean bath houses, shaded creek-side sites available, pull-thru sites available up to 46’, sanitary dumping station, 24-hour security, LP gas available, shuffleboard and horseshoes. Information on Ricky Van Shelton...He started dating Bettye Witt in 1979; and in December 26, 1984, the two of them moved to Nashville Tennessee, to try their luck in the music business. Bettye had accepted a position as Personnel Manager with a new company; and Ricky spent his days cleaning house, writing songs and preparing his voice to be ready for his “big break”. At night, Ricky visited local night clubs, making contacts in the industry and handing out homemade demos to whomever would listen. Today, when he’s not touring, Ricky spends time flying his airplane, working on his 150-acre farm, gardening, repairing his collection of classic cars and antiquing.
